Dr. Nancy Franklin, MD, FAAD

Dr. Nancy Franklin is the inventor of MDERM, a patent pending moisturizer. She is a board-certified dermatologist who has been treating diseases of the skin for the past 35 years. Throughout the years, she grew frustrated with the moisturizers available to her patients; many were filled with petroleum products, hormone disruptors, and harmful chemicals. She wanted to create a moisturizer that incorporates plant-derived and natural ingredients which have been demonstrated through scientific research and clinical studies to alleviate dry skin conditions.
It started with a plant
As she studied various plants, she learned about the unique antioxidant, moisturizing, and soothing compounds in the plant moringa, and its benefits for the skin. She partnered with a chemist who created a proprietary method to preserve the amazing compounds found in moringa.
This plant is so impressive that we named our brand after it! (The M in MDERM = moringa)
We’ve got one ingredient, now what?
Dr. Franklin continued with her research. What started with one ingredient turned into a larger idea for an amazing plant-derived moisturizer for dry skin. For every animal or synthetic ingredient, she found plant-based alternatives backed by a ton of scientific evidence. On top of that, she made sure the formula didn’t contain any of what she called Hell No! Ingredients.
Now we’re getting somewhere
Dr. Franklin kept pushing forward, always asking, “How can I make this better?” She included squalane, a non-greasy alternative to petrolatum (a petroleum-derived oil that’s in countless moisturizers). She found that many moisturizers use synthetic or animal-derived ceramides, so she incorporated new plant-based ceramides instead.
A disturbing discovery
Dr. Franklin learned that liquid plastics are used in 9 out of 10 leading skincare brands! These inexpensive chemicals are primarily added to improve how products feel, but they’re plastic. Yuck! Every year, millions of tons of non-biodegradable liquid plastics are dumped into our oceans, our lakes, and our soil with uncertain effects on the environment and our health. Could an alternative exist?
